The new Home and The Birds.

April 11, 2008

G’day everyone.

After moving house and having to do the repairs and repainting after previous tennants I found bits of Iron around the property and I used them to build a new Avairy. Some of the materials were originally part of a much smaller avairy that had been demolished and was in poor condition.

I have now moved the birds into their new home. I now own the Blue male and its partner. I moved them in their nesting box along with a chick and some eggs. Also The natural green and the albino have been given back to me. I moved them and a number of eggs in their nest box as well.

I was also given a chick from the green and albino with a deformed or damaged useless leg. Today it flew the length of the cage about six inches above the ground. I gave it some extra flight training after that.

When I was trying to catch Ozzie’s partner he managed to escape. I shifted her in her nesting box with about 5 eggs and put her in a smaller parrot cage. I also introduced a green male with a pale blue from the legs back on his underside. This evening I inspected the nesting box and there is a newly hatched chick. Her first chick.

I also have the grey and his partner in the larger avairy.

Moving

April 4, 2008

Hi everyone,

I have finally finished moving and painting and building a new avary. Tomorrow I will be moving the birds into their new home. I will have to shift some that are sitting on eggs so that could be interesting.

Regarding the pictures I took. They are mostly too blurred to be able to blow them up for use on here so I will have to start them again.

I have been given some of the other birds so I will have to see what pairs I have when I pick them up.

Regards

Reg

Things got a little hectic around here.

January 7, 2008

G’day everyone,

The white and green budgies in nest box two are now raising 6 chicks. I reckon I can see the coloured feathers replacing the down on the eldest chick. If you want to take any guess at its colour you don’t have much time left now.

The last generation of chicks have been moved out into the juveniles avery and there are 11 birds in there now.

The pair of silver quail on the floor of the cage have had six chicks and inspite of extensive care one chick died. I believe this was the chick that was attacked by one of the older chicks. the three older chicks were moved to an avery of their own.

Three of chicks from the clutch before those went to a new home and a female was kept here. A male was introduced from an outside source and she attacked it. He was put in a cage of his own in the same avery but on his release she decided to attack him again. This time she was placed in the cage. She has now been released and there is some harmony between them now. These are on the floor of the juvenile avery.

There are 6 or 7 eggs in nest box 3 and eight eggs in nest box 4. The couple in 4 raised 8 chicks last time round. Wonder if they will do that again.

Till next time

Five

December 28, 2007

Gday everyone,

Just a short update.

The white and green pair in nesting box 2 now have 5 chicks. They have only raised one batch of four chicks so it will be interesting to see how they go with 5 chicks.

The blue and green in nest box 4 have 8 eggs and have hatched and successfully raised 7 chicks previously. On that occasion we transferred one of the older chicks to the yellow and green pair in nest box 3 to ease the burden on the parents. The adoption went smoothly and without a hitch.

The yellow and green in nest box 3 only have three eggs at present so they might be able to adopt more of the chicks from nest box 4 this time

Thats all folks,

Reg

Ozzie

December 26, 2007

G’day Everyone,

My PA arrived back on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. She brought with her a male budgie she was given three years ago that she had name Ozzie.

I took Ozzie out into the avery of young birds.

The five chicks in the cage all turned out to be male as they all tried to mate with her at once.

Ozzie turned out on arrival to be a female. She is a smallish bird, a yellow with white splashes and she has black and yellow shells on her wings. I put her in a small cage in the avery for her own protection and I thought the males might settle down. Today I released her into the avery again and she was swarmed again. So it was back into the cage.

My PA decided on a partner for her. She selected a white faced blue with pale blue and grey shells. His parents are the couple using nesting box 4.

We have put Ozzie and her new partner into a breeding box on their own next to the grey I have been nursing and her partner. Away from the pack situation ozzie’s partner has behaved himself and looks like settling to a normal partnership. The two couples have been conversing through the mesh section of the wall between the two cages.

Today I had to loosen the feathers around the greys eye again as they were all matted and stiff. I decided that the problem seems to be that though I have been paying attention to the eye I haven’t dealt with the feathers very well and they have been matting on drying. Today I wetted the feathers untill they were all moving independantly of each other and then I dried them with a tissue. I did that all over a second time and later when I inspected her I found that the feathers looked to be correctly aligned around her eye. Hopefuly that might be the end of the nursing. Time will tell.

The white and green using nesting box 2 now have hatched three chicks

Thats all for now Folks

Best regards,

Reg

Pictures

December 23, 2007

G’day everyone,

Yesterday i managed to take some pictures and some can be enlarged.

I will upload them as soon as i manage to crop them so that you can see the birds.

I think they were all a bit flighty because they thought the camera was going to steal their spirit away. I guess I will have to take a lot more shots before they get used to the camera and will sit still to have their pictures taken . <:-)

Work to be done.

Hello world!

December 21, 2007

G’day,

Hey everyone, I have some Budgerigars, (Love Birds) in an avery. There are four breeding pairs.

Using the first box is a yellow green/blue mated with () .  This Pair have five eggs at present. They produced some offspring some months ago and none survived. They moved to nesting box 5 and had another clutch of eggs that didn’t hatch. They have now returned to the no 1 position.

Using nesting box two there are an all white with red eyes and a hint of blue to the white female. She has mated with an almost natural coloured male. They have raised a clutch of three chicks, their first, and have started hatching the next clutch of eggs. Yesterday Friday I found a new chick in the box. On wednesday i found the first hatchling from this clutch

Box 3 is the domain of a yellow faced hen with yellow grey shells and a greenish body. the male is more of a yellowish green all over. This couple have tended to produce offspring with yellow grey shells and yellow faces with grey bodies.

Box 4 is occupied by a yellow faced green with yellow and grey shells on the wings. Their offspring vary and there have been yellow and grey shells with white faces and grey bodies and white faced blues with white and grey shells.

I took a series of images i had intended to use here but they weren’t suitable so i will take another series.

I will be bringing video of life in the avery to this blog and i will be endeavouring to set up a video from the avery in time

I have a chick/young adult that has had an eye infection. I have used a soft artist’s brush and washed the eye and the feathers around it with Electrically produced colloidal silver. The infection has cleared up but some of the feathers still tend to stick so that they are touching the eye and making it weep.  I have cared for this one for some time now and it learned every trick in the book to avoid being caught in a hand net. I resorted to putting it in a small house bird cage. There is usually more than one way to skin a cat.

I have selected an offspring from the white and green. It has a yellow face and blue/green body with () shells. basically i have put the two together for company in a smaller avery cage where it is not too difficult to catch them. I feel that these are a pair and may mate in time. but for now I have to adopt a wait and see position.
